Elon Musk’s Ex, Grimes, Speaks Out On Custody Battle: ‘I Just Slept and Cried’

Grimes, whose real name id=s Claire Elise Boucher, revealed she was “going bankrupt” during her custody dispute with Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla, with whom she shares three children. The custody battle unfolded in 2023, with Grimes and Musk filing separate lawsuits against each other in California and Texas.

The former couple had been battling over custody of their three children: 4-year-old X Æ A-12, also known as baby X; 2-year-old Exa Dark Sideræl; and 2-year-old Tau also named as Techno Mechanicus.

Grimes and Musk have mostly remained silent about their custody dispute, but now Grimes has shared how the legal battle with her billionaire ex affected her. When a fan on X, formerly known as Twitter, asked why she hadn’t released much new work recently, Grimes responded, “The threat of losing your kids while going bankrupt fighting for them is not very conducive to creative thoughts. I just slept and cried every minute I wasn’t explicitly fighting for my kids during that year.”

Grimes explained that much of her artistic output was on hold for four years due to having children and spending a year in court, likely referring to her custody battle. She also noted that she had only a “fraction” of Elon Musk’s resources, highlighting the vast financial disparity between them, as Musk’s net worth stands at $315 billion, making him the richest person in the world.

She wrote, “I spent a year locked in a legal battle in a state with terrible mothers’ rights, where my Instagram posts and modeling were used as arguments against me having custody of my kids,” Grimes shared. “I was fighting while detaching from the love of my life as he became unrecognizable to me, all with a fraction of his resources. During that time, I didn’t see one of my babies for five months.”

Representatives for Grimes and Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Grimes appeared to be referring to their eldest child, X, who is often seen publicly with Musk.

Recent reports have suggested that Musk and Grimes may be house-hunting together for a shared family compound in Los Angeles, but her comments point to a more complicated situation. Despite the drama, Grimes asserts that she feels “on top of the world” both creatively and emotionally, and is ready to release art that is “upsetting and provocative,” yet undeniably authentic.
