14-year-old girl dies after car crash in Richmond

(KRON) — A 14-year-old girl died after an early Monday morning crash in Richmond, the Richmond Police Department announced Tuesday in a Facebook post. The fatal crash happened around 5:17 a.m. near the 600 block of Canal Boulevard.

RPD officers arrived at the scene and saw an idle and “heavily damaged” Infinity G35 coupe on the northbound lanes of Canal Boulevard. According to police, the 14-year-old was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries.

Officers located another occupant of the Infinity, an 11-year-old girl. Police said she was taken to the hospital where she remains in critical condition.

At this time, it is unknown who was was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.

According to RPD, the 11-year-old and 14-year-old were sisters. It was also later determined that the Infinity was reported stolen by the San Pablo Police Department on Oct. 12.

The Infinity was speeding northbound on Canal Boulevard when it left the roadway and struck two trees and a pole on the east curb line, RPD said. After the crash, two 15-year-old male occupants of the vehicle ran away from the scene, according to police. One of them was located at a nearby hospital, and the other was found at his Richmond residence later that evening.

However, Richmond police said there are still a lot of question marks in regard to this crash.

“At this time, the occupants have provided conflicting statements about who was driving at the time of the collision,” RPD said. “Investigators will follow up on additional leads, including DNA evidence, to determine which occupant was driving during the crash.

“We are saddened by this senseless tragedy that has resulted in the loss of such a young life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and the remaining victim who remains hospitalized.”
