Burglars smash glass, rob Mexican restaurant in Wicker Park late Saturday night; CPD warns of string of burglaries

CHICAGO — Burglars smashed through glass and robbed a Mexican restaurant in Wicker Park late Saturday night.

Chicago police say they’re looking for three suspects who broke into Taco and Burrito Express, located in the 1500 block of North Ashland Avenue, at about 11 p.m.

The burglary was captured on video by the restaurant’s security cameras. The video shows three people wearing dark clothing, who all appear to be young men, enter the restaurant.

Police say when officers arrived, they found that the glass door had been shattered, the cash register drawer was missing and the front desk was in complete disarray. The restaurant’s owners also say the burglars broke a bathroom door. It’s not known how much money was taken.

The burglars took off shortly after the alarm could be heard on the security video. They fled in an unknown direction, and it’s not clear if they went into an awaiting car. Nobody was in custody as of early Sunday morning.

The restaurant’s owners, meanwhile, say they plan to reopen the business on Monday.

Chicago police issued a business alert Sunday morning about a string of five commercial burglaries that have taken place this month, four on the Near South Side and one in the Loop. The burglary at Taco and Burrito Express on Saturday night makes it six.

Police do believe at least some of the burglaries are related.
