A bus crashed into a transit depot building in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, on Thursday morning, seriously injuring a pedestrian.
Fitchburg police said they responded to a report of a pedestrian crash involving a Montachusett Regional Transit Authority bus at 100 Main St. around 7:48 a.m.
Fitchburg Deputy Fire Chief Patrick Roy said the initial call said a person was trapped underneath the bus and the vehicle was on fire.
Upon arrival, the 65-year-old male victim was treated by police officers and emergency medical personnel. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was flown by medical helicopter to a trauma hospital. He was in critical condition, Roy said.
The driver of the bus was not injured, and only one other person was on the bus at the time. They left the scene before police and fire personnel got there.
One witness said there were a few dozen people inside the terminal waiting to get onto the bus when it drove through the glass window, pinning the man.
Roy said with everyone in the breezeway waiting for buses and trains, the incident could have been much worse.
Fitchburg and state police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Additional details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
