ISRO Prepares For Launch Of India’s First AI Lab On PSLV; Here’s What It Will Do

ISRO is preparing for the launch of the Proba-3 mission aboard the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-XL) on December 4, but this mission includes more than just one significant payload. Among the cutting-edge technologies being sent into space is India’s first artificial intelligence (AI) laboratory, developed by Hyderabad-based space technology company TakeMe2Space.

The project, called My Orbital Infrastructure – Technology Demonstrator (MOI-TD), represents a major leap forward in satellite operations and space-based AI applications.

The MOI-TD platform is being launched with the support of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe), the central agency that facilitates private-sector involvement in the space industry, India Today reported.

The project tackles a critical challenge faced by satellite systems today- the inefficiency of transmitting and processing large volumes of data on Earth.

One of the major limitations of current satellite operations is the loss of valuable data, which can reach up to 40 percent due to issues like cloud cover. The delays in processing this information on the ground can sometimes take weeks, reducing its usefulness for time-sensitive applications. MOI-TD will address this problem by enabling data processing directly in space, which significantly speeds up data delivery while also reducing operational costs.

Ronak Kumar Samantray, the founder and CEO of TakeMe2Space, said per India Today that the MOI-TD project aims to democratise access to space technology. He noted that the platform would open up Earth observation and space research to a wider audience, including students, researchers, and enthusiasts.

The lab users will interact with the satellite through a web-based console called OrbitLab. This platform allows users to upload AI models that can be used for a variety of applications, including monitoring environmental changes, tracking deforestation, and detecting greenhouse gas emissions.

The initiative has already attracted its first research partners, including a Malaysian university and a group of Indian school students.
