Kerala Schools In Kochi Replace Marks With Emojis And Stars; Internet Debates If It’s A Good Idea

From pre-schools to 2nd grade, some of CBSE schools in Kerala’s Kochi will implement a new form of assessment that involves emojis.

The push comes as schools are moving from written exams for junior grades. Smileys will be deployed to assess the children’s participation in a variety of activities, including games. CBSE Management Association’s president, Mr. T. P. Ibrahim Khan, remarked that the emojis will enhance the skills of the children at such a tender age. The emoji grading system is in accordance with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to make education as stress-free as possible and also reduce rote learning. The NEP also endeavors to inculcate critical thinking and practical skills among the students, thereby emphasizing conceptual understanding and not giving significance to grades. While the smiley grading will boost young students’ appetite for academia, the move is not officially directed by the CBSE.
