OpenAI Rolls Out Free ChatGPT Search, Maps And Voice Features in the Works

OpenAI has officially rolled out ChatGPT Search for all users globally for free. Notably, this feature was announced back in October 2024 for all the paid subscribers. This feature was initially available under the name SearchGPT with an invite only method. This time around, it is now available for all users worldwide.

OpenAI also posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, “ChatGPT search 🌐is starting to roll out to all Free users today. Search the web in a faster, better way—available globally on and our mobile and desktop apps for all logged-in users.”

The ChatGPT Search offers quick and up-to-date answers along with links to relevant web sources, a task that is usually managed by search engines. OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, Kevin Weil, introduced the latest update in a YouTube video, emphasizing the benefits of incorporating real-time web data into the AI chatbot. In this upgraded version, key links from sources like Netflix or travel booking sites appear at the top of search results, followed by ChatGPT’s text-based responses.

The update introduces voice search for users with Advanced Voice Mode, accessible by tapping the audio waveform button. Users can ask for real-time information on topics such as travel, weather, or activities, and ChatGPT’s Voice Assistant will respond in one of ten voice styles.

OpenAI has also improved browsing speed and efficiency for users selecting ChatGPT as their default search engine. Additionally, a new Chrome extension allows users to easily set ChatGPT as their default search engine for quick answers from reliable sources.

Additionally, OpenAI has also introduced real-time video and screen-sharing features to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode, allowing users to share their screens for feedback on tasks like solving complex problems. To initiate video, users can click a video icon, while screen sharing can be accessed through the three-dot menu.

Now available on iOS and Android for ChatGPT Teams, Plus, and Pro users, the feature will expand to ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu subscribers in January.
