In a post back from 2022, while commenting on the state of affairs in the corporate world, shark Radhika Gupta quipped that 62% of desis feel they have been rudely treated at the workplace at least once in a month. She adds that 75% of the employees believe managers to be the worst part of their mundane day at work. Culture is a tenfold bigger cause of resignation than compensation, Gupta remarks, further suggesting that these grim statistics call for a workplace with more heart! But two years since that tweet, we have the likes of billionaire tech businessmen like Narayana Murthy (Infosys) advocating for a toxic workplace with 70-hours-work-week and no work-life balance and bragging about it, with acolytes like Ola’s Bhavish Aggarwal suggesting weekends are a western concept. A Gallup Workplace Report in June stated that nearly 90% of desi employees admitted to being suffering, while 40% of the surveyed confessed that they were sad. No wonder the Murthys and the Aggarwals foster such a toxic work culture that not even the death of an EY India fresher recently had softened these jingoist capitalist’s ethos.
